Naan Pizza with Figs Goat Cheese & Balsamic Pinot Reduction

Naan Pizza with Figs Goat Cheese recipe
We almost let fig season escape without sharing one of our most fragrant and enticing appetizer recipes with you, Naan Pizza with Figs, Goat Cheese & Balsamic Pinot Reduction. With juicy organic figs from the Santa Barbara Farmers Market and fresh thyme, each savory bite reminds you of the lovely days of summer greeting the start of autumn.

It makes a wonderful hors d’oeuvre for large parties or just a quiet evening for two at home. They are best right out of the oven, when the onions are still warm and the figs perfume the air. In our kitchen they usually don’t have time to even cool down before they are devoured by hungry guests. We have made this appetizer for many happy gatherings and it is always tremendously popular.

Figs Santa Barbara Farmers Market
Judit found figs at the Farmers Market

Before moving to the Central Coast of California we only munched on dried figs and had no idea about what culinary treasure we were missing! In the markets of Hungary, Germany and in Austria these darling purple globes made their appearance mostly around Christmas time, and quickly disappeared. The sweet fig season is in full bloom in Santa Barbara right now and the season typically lasts from late July through early October, but we have had some unusually short seasons over the years, like last year when we had to search all the Farmers Markets and stores to find figs at the end of August. Can you imagine our joy when we finally found a few baskets at the Farmers Market.

Figs Santa Barbara Sunset
Naan Pizza with Figs, Goat Cheese Pinot
A fresh plump fig tastes like honeyed peaches and sweet strawberries with a soft texture and crunchy tiny seeds. This seductive fruit fascinated poets and culinary adventurers alike. We simply adore them too and are plotting many ways to enjoy this tantalizing fruit. Our thoughts are on jam, tart or on savory sauce, but mostly how could we get more…more…and more!

Naan Pizza Corina
Corina is thinking of which piece to have first…

For this Naan Pizza with Figs, Goat Cheese & Balsamic Pinot Reduction recipe we used Mission figs, they have a dark purple skin with a peachy pink interior and are quite common in California and grow throughout the city. We encourage you to make this recipe with dry figs if you don’t have fresh figs available. Figs were originally discovered thousands of years ago and Mission Figs were brought to San Diego around 1770 by Franciscan missionaries and were planted by the California Missions. Figs were eaten by the Olympic athletes of ancient Greece and at one point in Greek history it was illegal to export high quality figs out of the country.

Naan Pizza Fog Goatcheese
Figs are said to lower high blood pressure and are a good source of potassium, magnesium, and fiber. If you need to eat diabetic-friendly make sure to use fresh figs since the dried ones have a higher sugar content. Figs are one little powerful superfood and for it’s small size is packed full of nutrition. They are extremely perishable so if you buy them fresh make sure to eat them within a few days.

Rideau Vineyard
Relaxing at Rideau Vineyard

As to this luscious, sweet fig appetizer you will truly relish in the crunchy crust, juicy delicate fig slices and in the creamy softness of the goat cheese. The touch of minty notes from the thyme and the burst of jammy flavors of the Balsamic Pinot Reduction will bring a satisfying balance to every bite. To make this appetizer super easy we got organic naan that is already prebaked so it wont take very long and you can assemble it while the guests are there.

This recipe could also easily translate to a larger whole wheat pizza pie. If you are inclined to do this, make sure to prebake your crust, before adding all these delectable toppings. Most of you time will be spent making the caramelized onions and reduction, so if you are planing a party you may wish to make them ahead. We like to prepare this steps a day in advance and just focus on assembly during the party.

Rideau Vineyard Santa BarbaraPerfect Glamorous Pairing: Rideau Vineyard Pinot Noir John Sebastiano Vineyard from the Santa Rita Hills in the Santa Barbara County, California. We usually pair this naan pizza with a Sauvignon Blanc, but we were so enticed with this fruity and earthy Pinot Noir from Rideau that we just had to give it a try. The rose petal notes and thyme went marvelously with the flavors of this pizza. A bottle is about $46. Rideau is such a lovely vineyard to visit with rows of vines leading to an old world French Victorian style tasting room.

This Naan Pizza with Figs Goat Cheese & Balsamic Pinot Reduction is a delicious beginning for an evening dinner with:

  1. That is so innovative to use naan as the base like a pizza! Indian meets Italian with smashing results 😀
Beautiful topping as well, I love fig with goats cheese!

    Cheers

What a great idea to have figs for a pizza topping! I haven’t thought of figs like this and this really does sound like it would be spectacular for a dinner party appetizer.

  3. What beautiful simplicity! I love your description of a gorgeously ripe fig as “like honeyed peaches and sweet strawberries” – for anyone who doesn’t already love figs, what more could it possibly take? And my, oh my … combine them with creamy goat cheese and a luxurious reduction sauce … pure bliss! I just love this! Pinning, of course! Well done once again, ladies! 😀

  4. I love this combination, in fact I recently made almost this exact appetizer only on crostini. However, I love that you used Naan and your balsamic reduction sounds luscious with the addition of wine. I will definitely have to try that. Thanks so much for sharing.

Wonderful idea for a pizza topping. Love the creative and delicious combination of fresh figs and balsamic pinot reduction, it sounds divine. Even though I just had a late lunch I am picturing how it tastes from all the gorgeous photos.

    1. Hello Jessica and we are glad you like the photos and recipe! The little dollops of goat cheese add a nice balance to the figs and balsamic reduction and it is never too early to think about the naan pizza. 🙂 J+C

Awesome Naan Pizza and toppings! The fresh figs are such a great idea and the Pinot Noir on top sounds awesome. Can I have it for dinner instead of just as an appetizer?

  7. Hi Judit and Corina!
I’ve eaten fresh figs from a tree on a Greek island and they were just wonderful! I didn’t know that it used to be illegal to export them from there, though!
Brilliant idea to put these on a pizza … and to use naan! I’ll definitely try that next time I’m in the mood for a pizza!

    1. Hello Helen, Wish we could have been there! We can just picture you now in Greece sitting under the fig tree and nibbling away at tasty figs all day long. Figs were illegal to export quite a long time ago, during the time of Spartans (not Gerard Butler) and the rule of Attica (a region that includes Athens) by Solon who lived around 638-558 BC. Hope you get to enjoy the naan pizza soon! J+C

Incredible version of a pizza! I want some right now and it’s so much better than my usual toppings that I have on breads. I like it that you can make the caramelized onions ahead and then just put it together at a dinner party or when you are super hungry and don’t want to wait too long to eat.

    1. You could even put these toppings on regular bread or pizza Kendra, and the benefit of making the caramelized onions ahead of time is that you can assemble the pizzas during the party and serve them warm to your guests. J+C

One word sums it up for this Naan Pizza “Delicious” ! The toppings sounds awesome and it’s something that even I can try to make. My friends will be impressed by my culinary skills if I serve this!

  10. Girls…this? –>”We almost let fig season escape without sharing one of our most fragrant and enticing appetizer recipes with you, Naan Pizza with Figs, Goat Cheese & Balsamic Pinot Reduction.” No, no, no! You see, we simply could NOT live without this. Figs, Goat Cheese and Balsamic Pinot Reduction??? I’m trying to figure out how in the world I lived without this. No more ~ trust me ~ this one I’m trying!!! (Pinned!) And I love the way you called the figs ‘darling purple globes’. I would’ve never thought of that, and it’s SO true! I will never look at figs the same. 🙂 Looks delish!

    1. Haha! It simply would have been unforgivable to miss fig season 🙂 Glad you liked our Naan Pizza Kristi and thank you for Pinning with such gusto! Hope you get to try the recipe soon and if the fig season has ended you may have to make do with dried figs, which are not quite as darling, but still good, or patiently wait until next year. Cheers! J+C

It is making me want to eat the screen! Such a gorgeous pizza with toppings that sound divine and tasty. The caramelized onions and figs are a winning combination and the sauce takes it to another level of taste.

    1. Thank you Natasha, hopefully the screen is still intact! We love the taste of caramelized onions on so many things and it just makes a nice flavor base for the figs and goat cheese. J+C

    1. Figs and honey are always a delicious idea Kelly! We love making this naan pizza for an appetizer, but have also had it as an entire meal. It is difficult to have just one piece. J+C

  12. says: Brian

I’m a huge fan of figs and dates and this Naan Pizza sounds awesome with the cheese and caramelized onions. The Pinot reduction is a cool addition. What a flavor party!

    1. Nice description Brian, it is a naan pizza party! The caramelized onions bring together the nuances of the fresh figs, goat cheese, and the Balsamic Pinot Reduction in one happy bite!

  13. Using naan as a pizza base is fab. I have done it. It makes it so easy to make something special. But also it allows me to make myself something yummy without having to eat that same yumminess for days! It’s only been in the last 5 yrs that I have started appreciating figs. Yes, I was ruined by a dislike of fig newtons. Ick—they give figs a bad rep. We have several awesome goat farms in the area who make prize winning goat cheese. So I am always interested in recipes that make use of that.

    1. What a treat to have such quality local goat cheese nearby Carol! Hope you get to try it on this naan pizza and at least now that you like figs it will be something that wont remind you of a certain fig cookie 🙂 We have made this recipe with dried figs before, but fresh figs are better for you so we do try to find them when they are in season. Sadly the season seems to end too quickly each year and some of the stores have already stopped carrying fresh figs. J+C

    1. Thank you Gayle! You can drizzle on many dishes or even on ice cream this incredibly simple and delicious balsamic wine reduction – hope you enjoy the recipe!

  15. Wow – i couldn’t think of a more perfect combination of flavors – beautifully executed! And thank you for the photo journey – makes me miss my home state! 🙂
